MakingCents is a program made possible through Smart investing@your library, a partnership between the American Library Association and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. It offers a number of resources both print and online as well as seminars and programs to assist anyone seeking to understand smart investing practices and to help people find ways to make the most of their money.

MakingCents is a free program provided by select public libraries in Birmingham and Jefferson and Shelby counties. It provides unbiased information to help people of all ages, economic circumstances and cultural backgrounds make good financial decisions and plan for the future.

Free Tax Preparation Through VITA
 

The VITA Program generally offers free tax help to people who make $52,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals in local communities. They can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.
